Betsy Conder Scholarship for Emerging Writers, $1,000
The Betsy Conder Scholarship for Emerging Writers recognizes high school juniors and seniors whose writing interrogates social practices that perpetuate injustice. Students wishing to apply can submit a short response (500-1,000 words) to the following prompt: In his"Letter from Birmingham Jail," Martin Luther King Jr. argues that "[t]here are just laws and there are unjust laws. Ample historical evidence speaks to the truth of King's distinction. Yet it is difficult to articulate. In your own words, analyze the difference between a just law and unjust law.
